For this week's blog, we have decided to pick one individual who took the time to answer a few questions about his passion for Canadian trekking! Meet Michael Morton, an environmental field scientist who loves adventuring just as much as we do.

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I am an environmental field scientist.

Q: Which hiking trails do you trek and which ones do you love the most?

A: Where I live in Burlington, Ontario, it is impossible to not love the Bruce Trail. Stretching from Niagara to Tobermory, this 885 km trail provides it all. There are countless scenic and memorable sections within an hour's drive of downtown Toronto. With great views and tough terrain, it provides a corridor of green, something that is hard enough to find in Southern Ontario. I hope one day to be able to claim that I have walked the Bruce Trail in its entirety.

Q: What Fjällräven products do you use while trekking? And which are your favourites?

A: I have quite a few pieces of Fjällräven gear, however, my favorite by far are the Keb Trousers. I have had these for a couple of years and it has been that long since I have worn anything else outside. They offer a perfect combination of durability and flexibility. The articulation of the legs allows them move with your body and not against it. The adjustable elastic cuff at the ankle is something you will be hard pressed to find in outdoor pants, I hate baggy, saggy pants. If I could only have one pair of pants for the rest of my life, these would be it. I also love my Stubben day pack, it offers a great compromise of vintage looks and modern functionality. As much as we all love week long trips, most of our hiking is done within the confines of a single day. It was designed for this purpose, and can be used as a pack as well as a seat, which has come in handy on countless occasions.

Q: Which trail do you look forward to hiking next?

A: The next trail that I am excited for is for most an unconventional one. In May, I am going on a 5-night canoe trip to Killarney Provincial Park. While portages can be gruesome, I love the challenge and pride that comes with the ability to carry everything you need on your back. I find that the mix of canoeing and portaging really spreads out the exercise and makes the days, and the scenery really flies by. It is a lot harder to disconnect in our mobile world, but on these back country trips you can truly unplug and just enjoy life in the moment.

Q: What made you pick Fjällräven as your go-to trekking gear and apparel?

A: I first heard of Fjällräven a few years ago, mostly through online sources. I also heard many great reviews! I finally found a local store that carried some articles of Fjällräven clothing, and tried on my soon to be trusty Keb Trousers. Instantly after I put them on, I knew that I was leaving the store with them. They provided all of the designs elements that my previous pants had lacked. Articulated knees, double tough fabric, adjustable ankle support, the list goes on. The Keb Trousers are a mix of tough G-1000 material and a stretch fabric. This allows me to use them from long distance quick moving hikes, to bushcraft and sitting around the campfire. The only drawback that could be mentioned is the initial sticker shock. However, when you use your equipment as much as I do, it actually seems like a bargain in the long run. Two years later and my pants are just as functional as day one, and I expect them to last many more. If these pants were lost I would quite literally purchase another pair the next day. G-1000 has very quickly become my favorite outdoor fabrics. A cotton and polyester blend, the material is tough wearing, water resistant and quick drying. The water resistance can be further improved with the application of wax, unlike many synthetic materials it will not burn easily around a campfire.
